Synchronize

“My name is… My name is…” You think to yourself desperately, but all you can remember is the name Joyah. Which is the name of the woman whose body this originally was. You’ve been inhabiting her body for two months now, well beyond the limit of the ‘body hop’ app. It was only supposed to be a fun experience for twenty-four hours, but nothing happened when the time to switch back came. You contacted support, and they told you that your old body was ‘unavailable.’ It could mean your old body had died or that the person had made efforts to keep the body permanently.

Unfortunately, the longer you inhabit a body, the more you start to ‘synchronise’ with it. First, this was in the form of the clothes you wanted to wear or the food you wanted to eat. Next, you found yourself speaking English with a more prominent accent as Malay became your native tongue. Now you cannot remember simple details like what country you are from or how old you really are: even your old name is out of reach. You have sometimes caught yourself referring to yourself as a woman or thinking of Malaysia as your home. You have also been finding it harder and harded to look away from the men you see walking around the city. Now, as you imagine those men roughly groping your body, you feel a flutter below and realise that you must only have a little bit of time left before your old self is lost completely…
