Schoolbell

“I am not a student at this school. I am not a student at this school…” Keiko repeated to herself, again and again, in fluent Japanese. Her cute Japanese schoolgirl voice audible, even if hard to hear, as she sat and whispered to herself.

Keiko was wrong of course. She was a student at the school, but it wasn’t that long ago that she was right. She didn’t use to be a student at this school. She didn’t use to be a student at all, or a girl or even Japanese. Only this morning, she was a foreign man named Lucas. Lucas was a teacher at the school and had come from America to help improve the school’s English-language education.

Lucas was a good-looking man with blue eyes and blonde hair that led him to be a Japanese fantasy of an American man. All the girls at the school loved him. All the girls, that was, other than Jun. Jun was a misfit at the school and was considered ‘spooky’ by the other students. So much so that they generally avoided her. In fact, even the teachers kept their distance from her. Being alone suited Jun just fine, as she preferred to keep to herself

Lucas, however, didn’t treat Jun this way. In fact, he brought special attention to Jun and punished her for her bad behavior in a way that the other teachers didn’t dare to. One day, Jun had had enough and told Lucas as much. This caused an argument between the two, which led to Jun cursing Lucas.

Lucas’s body rapidly morphed, as did his clothes, leading his tall American form to become that of a petite Japanese schoolgirl, complete in their school uniform. Lucas screamed when he saw what he had become and pleaded with Jun to turn him back. Something she said she would do, but only if Lucas did not believe he was a student by the school by the end of the school day.

Lucas thought this was easy until he realized that not only did no one else at the school remember who he was, but increasingly Lucas didn’t remember either. His memory was changing rapidly. Soon, he didn’t know English. Then he remembered his name was Keiko and saw his hometown as Fukuoka. This rapid loss of memory was what caused him to sit down and start chanting the mantra: I am not a student at this school.

‘Keiko, enough of this! Let’s get ready to go home!” Jun called to her, with a smirk.

This caused Keiko to break her concentration and look up. ‘Yes!’ She replied, any trace of Lucas long gone as the schoolbell rang out.
